Retail inflation marginally increased to 3.65 per cent in August and remained within the Reserve Bank’s target of 4 per cent, the government data showed on Thursday. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation was 3.6 per cent in July 2024 and 6.83 per cent in August 2023. Inflation in the food basket was 5.66 per cent in August, marginally up from 5.42 per cent in July, according to the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO). The inflation also was below 4 per cent in July. The government has tasked the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to ensure that the CPI inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the CBI to inform it the reason behind the heavy waterlogging in Old Rajinder Nagar on July 27 when three civil services aspirants died after drowning in a flooded coaching basement. The co-owners of the basement — Parvinder Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh and Sarbjit Singh — had moved the high court last month for bail on the ground that they are merely the landlords of the basement which was let out on rental basis to the coaching centre and, therefore, they had no role whatsoever in the unfortunate event.
CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury passes away after prolonged illness
Sitaram Yechury was hospitalised at AIIMS on August 19 to receive treatment for a chest infection resembling pneumonia. Yechury became a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1975, shortly after joining the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in 1974. During the Emergency period, while still a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Yechury was detained. He also served as the president of the JNU Students’ Union on three separate occasions between 1977 and 1988.
